“Be early rather than late”/刻限は早めに

One of the Seven Principles taught by Sen no Rikyu is:

“Be early rather than late.”

In the tea ceremony, time is not just a schedule.
It is a form of respect.

Arriving early means
you value the other person’s time,
you create calm instead of rush,
and you allow space for the moment to unfold naturally.

In daily life, being early may look like
preparing before being asked,
arriving with a few minutes to breathe,
or giving others the gift of ease.

Time, when used thoughtfully,
becomes a quiet expression of care.

Respect is often felt
before a single word is spoken.

「刻限は早めに」

千利休の七則のひとつに、
「刻限は早めに」という教えがあります。

茶道において、
時間は単なる約束ではなく、
相手への敬意そのもの。

少し早めに到着すること。
余裕をもって準備すること。
慌ただしさを持ち込まないこと。

それは、
「あなたとの時間を大切にしています」
という、言葉のいらないメッセージです。

時間の使い方には、
その人の心の姿勢が表れます。

早めの一歩が、
場の空気をやさしく整えてくれるのかもしれません。
